Buck
While
Buck may be heading into his senior years, he has the energy level of a 3-
or 4-year-old. He loves to go for outings and he walks well on leash,
though, he does pull when he finds something particularly interesting
to smell. He gets two walks a day and runs the fenced-in yard in the morning
or afternoon, if the weather permits. Buck gets along well with the other
male basenji in the foster home and they enjoy a good wrestling match
several times a day.
He knows several commands like sit, down, off and come.
Very intelligent and eager to learn, Buck responds well to positive
correction, redirection and patience. Once he learned the routine here, Buck
fell into line very well. He does like to jump up on people when they come
to the door, and he does counter surf, although we are working with him on
that. Being consistent with reprimands has helped with these issues.
His former owner described Buck as best when he was tired
out from a busy day, and I would echo that sentiment. When he's gotten some
energy out of his system, Buck loves spending time with his people and will
lay close to be petted and cuddled. He is house trained and has not had any
accidents in the house. He is not house destructive and will only chew on
appropriate toys or chews. Typical basenji, Buck does counter surf. Food,
paper items and other valuables should be kept out of reach.
Care needs to be taken when people are entering or exiting
the home, as he can be an escaper and may bolt if given the opportunity!
Buck can be left alone for 4-6 hours and will find a sunny spot to curl up
and sleep and wait for you to come home. He loves to have a place where he
can sit and watch the world go by, or watch his people come and go. He has
the run of the house during the day and there have been no incidents.
He
enjoys sleeping in the bed with his people at night. He is good with our
14-year-old son and his friends, but should be watched around younger
children until he becomes acclimated. Buck was a bit timid and aloof upon
his arrival in the foster home, but relaxed within two weeks and became very
trusting and loving. Care and time, as well as a happy, gentle home has done
wonders for this guy.
Buck would do best in a home with older children, 12 and
up. A fenced yard is not necessary, as long as he is provided with playtime
and brisk walks daily; a tired basenji makes for a happy home!
If you think you could provide Buck with love, activity, and evening
cuddle-time, please read the data sheet below carefully, complete
the BRAT
adoption form (if you have not previously done so)
and contact BRAT coordinator,
Roberta Kosek.
The coordinator's link will take you to a form that will ask you your name,
e-mail address, the city and state you live in, why this dog is perfect for
your family, a typical day in your household, and, if applicable, how you
plan to transport Buck. There is an
adoption fee of $225.00 for Buck. This fee is used for all costs
associated with the care and feeding of Buck and future basenjis in
rescue. BRAT adopters receive a dog that has been spayed or neutered
($150-$400, depending on location), fully vaccinated and strip-tested for heartworm and Fanconi (negative unless otherwise noted), and temperament
evaluated. In addition, BRAT provides free lifetime post-adoption counseling
to help deal with behavioral issues. Finally, we provide a free lifetime
identification tag connected to our "lost dog" toll free number. |
