Basenji Underground Railroad (BUR)
What is BUR?
The Basenji Underground Railroad (BUR) is a network of
BRAT volunteers who agree to transport BRAT rescues to their new homes.
BUR is operated by Basenji Rescue and Transport, Inc.
How Does BUR Work?
BUR transports dogs from Point A to Point B. If a dog
is in Texas and the adopter is in California, volunteers have a system
for transporting the dog to its new home. Moving the dog is planned
through a BRAT email list of volunteers who have indicated they will
help transport. Multiple BRAT stationmasters may be involved. The
transport is carefully planned by the dogs coordinator. With the help of
volunteers and the new owner the dog gets to its new home. Occasionally
help from other rescue organizations is used.
What Do BUR Stationmasters Do?
BUR Stationmasters transport the dog relay-style. The
transfer is accomplished by establishing a series of of meeting points
along the route . The dog is then handed off from one BRAT stationmaster
to the next. If the entire trip cannot be made in one day the dog is
provided with temporary housing by one of the BRAT stationmasters until
the journey resumes.
Transporting by Air
Another possible method of transporting rescued
Basenjis is by air, either as cargo or with a human companion. For those
who travel frequently on business and are willing to take a rescue along
with them, the cost is minimal depending on the airlines charges for
animal transport.
Service Requirements
There is no mandatory service required for a BUR
volunteer. A volunteer is not expected to participate in every transport
that comes through his area, or every transport about which he is
contacted. Each Stationmaster makes a personal decision about whether or
not to become involved in a particular transfer and to what extent. A
stationmaster that opts out of one transfer may volunteer for future
transports through his area.
