Scotty's foster describes him as "a little gem", "a sweetheart" and "almost the perfect Basenj.” Like most Basenjis, Scotty hates the rain, but he is satisfied if he has only a short walk. When he goes to the dog park, he does more exploring alone than playing or he just wishes to stay near his person.

He is very relaxed at home and is not destructive. He does like to pull down a towel to roll on it. He is very affectionate and bonded quickly with his foster mom. He does well with the resident dogs, but he can be aggressive when it comes to food so he must be fed separately or watched very closely. In his foster home, he has improved when waiting for his food. Scotty does not like to have persons reach toward him unexpectedly and he does not like unexpected noises near him such as slapping the bed to get attention.

He sleeps in the bed with his foster family. He tends to follow his foster Mom and around and knows a few basic commands like sit, in French. He has adapted well in is foster home and to his new lifestyle. He does like people food, so one must watch carefully when he is walking, or when it is time to eat in the home.

Scotty does not do will with children, so he will not be placed in a home where there are young children or those not old enough to understand and accept that Scotty needs his space. Although Scotty is not generally destructive, he has chewed his harness when he was unhappy and alone. However, after a long walk, he is ready to nap for most of the day.

If you think you could provide Scotty with lots of activity, walks to keep him happy and continue to give him a settled routine, and learn commands in French or continue to teach Scotty commands in English, please read the data sheet below carefully, complete the BRAT adoption form (if you have not previously done so) and contact the BRAT coordinator, Linda Webb-Hilliard.

The coordinator's link will take you to a form that will ask you your name, email address, the city and state you live in, why this dog is perfect for your family, a typical day in your household, and, if applicable, how you plan to transport Scotty.

There is an adoption fee of $325.00 for Scotty. This fee is used for the extensive costs associated with vetting and otherwise caring for Scotty and future Basenjis in rescue. BRAT adopters receive a dog that has been spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, treated for fleas and internal worms if necessary, DNA tested for Fanconi syndrome (dogs under 10), and heartworm tested. Our dogs get recommended dental work. When indicated, we test our dogs for thyroid deficiencies. They are also temperament evaluated. In addition, BRAT provides free lifetime post-adoption counseling to help deal with behavioral or health issues. Finally, we provide a free lifetime identification tag connected to our "lost dog" toll free number.
