Ciya (pronounced Kai-Yah), is a very special red and white, seven and a half year-old, Basenji girl who loves all people (even children), dog, and cats – though she likes to chase the cats. Ciya came into rescue because she lived  on a farm with horses and she liked to chase them too. Her owner, though she loved her dearly, feared that either Ciya or the horses would be injured.

Ciya is described a very sweet girl. She met the volunteer who evaluated her immediately and so impressed him that he wanted to take her home. He described her as being the “sweetest Basenji” he had ever met. Ciya meets in a friendly manner and she bonds quickly. Her foster has found her to be wonderful with every person. The only negative reaction known is when she feels crowded or threatened and then she might growl.

She is house-trained and crate-trained although she had spent much of her life outside on the farm. She likes having male dog friends and she is found to be selective with her female friends. She is not destructive in her crate and loves curling on her bed in her foster home. Crating, when she cannot be supervised, is recommended because in true Basenji fashion, she can become mischievous.

Ciya knows sit, down, touch, come, and stay. Because she likes to please, she is super responsive to training. She is up to date on all vaccines, heartworm and fecal tested. She is designated as a Fanconi Carrier which means she is unlikely to ever develop Fanconi.

If you have been waiting for a perfect Basenji to appear, Ciya is probably about as close to perfect as one will ever find. She would like a home where she has at least one male playmate, is permitted to greet company and interact with them and freedom to show her family just what a sweet and loving girl she can be.

If you think you could provide Ciya with love, activity, and evening cuddle time, please read the data sheet below carefully, complete the BRAT adoption form (if you have not previously done so) and contact the BRAT coordinator, Linda Webb-Hilliard.

The coordinator's link will take you to a form that will ask you your name, email address, the city and state you live in, why this dog is perfect for your family, a typical day in your household, and, if applicable, how you plan to transport Ciya.

There is an adoption fee of $300.00 for Ciya. This fee is used for the extensive costs associated with vetting and otherwise caring for Ciya and future Basenjis in rescue. BRAT adopters receive a dog that has been spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, treated for fleas and internal worms if necessary, DNA tested for Fanconi syndrome (dogs under 10), and heartworm tested. Our dogs get recommended dental work. When indicated, we test our dogs for thyroid deficiencies. They are also temperament evaluated. In addition, BRAT provides free lifetime post-adoption counseling to help deal with behavioral or health issues. Finally, we provide a free lifetime identification tag connected to our "lost dog" toll free number.
