Meet Gizmo! This handsome boy is 1½ and would love to be your devoted sidekick. Gizmo is looking for a home as a solo pet with humans who enjoy lots of togetherness and are home much of the time! He is ready for a home where he can settle in and enjoy all the love, attention and exercise a young Basenji needs.

Gizmo loves to run at the dog park, but settles down nicely at home. He is a great sun lover and happily sprawls on the deck or in a sunbeam, drinking in the sunshine. He enjoys playing with his toys and chewing an antler or bone. Gizmo is fully house-trained and has not been house destructive in his foster home. He is a coffee lover and may help himself to a few sips of yours if you turn your back! He loves the companionship of watching TV next to you and, especially, snuggling under the covers with you at night.

When you must be away, Gizmo goes readily into his crate and sits to receive a treat.

Gizmo has a high degree of “Basenji intensity,” especially about things like food. So, the home he needs is with basenji-experienced people who understand that intensity. It’s hard for Gizmo to relax and drop his guard around other dogs in the home because he feels uneasy sharing attention or toys. So, he would like to be the only pet.

Gizmo is a tall boy (great reach onto a counter top!) and he needs to stretch out those long legs and really run! The dog park near his foster home is a joy for him and he flies across the park getting lots more exercise than he would walking on a leash. This is important for a young basenji. Gizmo gets along very well with the dogs he meets there, with no exceptions. He rides happily in the car.

Gizmo is fine meeting new people, but is wary of being touched much and is especially nervous about being grabbed or lifted. He is working at getting used to being “handled” more without being growly and owly.

Gizmo has a lot of love and devotion to give and needs a forever home that is all his! No kids, please, and no other pets. Just lots of love, companionship, exercise, patience and treats!

If you think you could provide Gizmo with love, activity, and evening cuddle time, please read the data sheet below carefully, complete the BRAT adoption form (if you have not previously done so) and contact the BRAT coordinator, Lindy Ireland.

The coordinator's link will take you to a form that will ask you your name, email address, the city and state you live in, why this dog is perfect for your family, a typical day in your household, and, if applicable, how you plan to transport Gizmo.

There is an adoption fee of $350.00 for Gizmo. This fee is used for the extensive costs associated with vetting and otherwise caring for Gizmo and future Basenjis in rescue. BRAT adopters receive a dog that has been spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, treated for fleas and internal worms if necessary, DNA tested for Fanconi syndrome (dogs under 10), and heartworm tested. Our dogs get recommended dental work. When indicated, we test our dogs for thyroid deficiencies. They are also temperament evaluated. In addition, BRAT provides free lifetime post-adoption counseling to help deal with behavioral or health issues. Finally, we provide a free lifetime identification tag connected to our "lost dog" toll free number.
