Meet Merlin, a nine-year-old black and white male Basenji. Merlin was one of a group of 21 Basenjis who came into BRAT after their owner-breeder passed away unexpectedly.

Merlin is a very calm and laid-back Basenji. He is slow to warm up to new people but given time to settle in at his own pace, he turns into a love-seeking cuddle buddy who wants nothing more than to be close to his people.

Merlin is not very food motivated, but he does love cheese! He is fine with being left alone in the house. He does not feel the need to chew up stuff or destroy things — one of the benefits of an older Basenji! Merlin really enjoys lazy sun-bathing and going on walks. He also enjoys going to his foster dad’s work with him during the day.

Merlin gets along with other dogs, but it takes him a while to warm up to them. He is timid and cautious when approached by dogs he doesn’t know. As an older Basenji, Merlin would do best with older dogs that are calm like him. An energetic young pup would be too much for him. For the same reason, Merlin would do best in a home with children over the age of 10. Merlin is fine with Basenji-savvy cats.

Merlin has a cataract in one eye that does not present a problem. He also has a cracked tooth that is not currently bothering him. His adopters will need to monitor it and take him in for a dental appointment if he begins to show any signs that it is bothering him.

Merlin is looking for a home where he will be appreciated for the gentleman he is and where cuddles will be readily available. Merlin’s adopters will need to be prepared to give him the time and space he needs to adjust to his new home and family. Once he feels secure in his new home, his loving personality will bloom.

If you think you could provide Merlin with love, activity, and evening cuddle time, please read the data sheet below carefully, complete the BRAT adoption form (if you have not previously done so) and contact the BRAT coordinator, Leah Jennings-Ernst.

The coordinator's link will take you to a form that will ask you your name, email address, the city and state you live in, why this dog is perfect for your family, a typical day in your household, and, if applicable, how you plan to transport Merlin.

There is an adoption fee of $250.00 for Merlin. This fee is used for the extensive costs associated with vetting and otherwise caring for Merlin and future Basenjis in rescue. BRAT adopters receive a dog that has been spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, treated for fleas and internal worms if necessary, DNA tested for Fanconi syndrome (dogs under 10), and heartworm tested. Our dogs get recommended dental work. When indicated, we test our dogs for thyroid deficiencies. They are also temperament evaluated. In addition, BRAT provides free lifetime post-adoption counseling to help deal with behavioral or health issues. Finally, we provide a free lifetime identification tag connected to our "lost dog" toll free number.
