Eddie is a handsome, curious, and talkative Basenji boy. He has the full range of Basenji yodels, chortles, huffs, yips, whines, howls, screams, and whimpers. You will always know what Eddie is thinking or feeling. He has a very short coat in a beautiful, cinnamon red color. He has good teeth and a tight double curl in his tail.

He has lots and lots of energy and loves the Basenji 500. Eddie loves long walks and likes to sniff and taste everything! He loves the woods and the beach, but like a good Basenji does not like water. He uses the doggie door at his foster family and often sits by himself outside in the sun.Eddie loves long walks! At the moment, Eddie is wearing an Easy Walk harness, which is helping him to learn to walk politely.

Eddie wants to meet new people and dogs. However, he is reactive if overstimulated. He likes to be petted but will step back when he is finished. An ideal forever home will teach Eddie trust and wait until he is comfortable to touch and cuddle him. He is learning to calm down and his forever family should be willing to keep training this beautiful boy.

Eddie plays well with the other three Basenjis in his foster family. He rolls on the carpet, plays with toys, boxes with the Basenjis, plays tug of war, and runs around. He tackles Kleenex and toys, and rolls around shaking them. After a little bit of play, he will go lie down by himself. Eddie will like having another dog to play with, as long as the other dog respects his personal space.

Eddie is grumpy when he is tired and when he wakes up. His foster mother thinks a calm and predictable environment will help him.

Eddie is still learning that the crate is for all meals and treats. He has not liked a crate in the past but is learning it can be ok. His foster family is feeding him and giving any treats, aside from training treats, in his crate. Eddie is not destructive indoors or outdoors (besides toilet paper and tissues.) But it will help him calm down if he learns his crate is a safe place to be when he is unhappy.

Eddie will bolt from the car or from any door so it is important to have gates or hold him when opening doors.Eddie will be a great dog for a patient and Basenji savvy family.

If you think you could provide Eddie with love, activity, and evening cuddle time, please read the data sheet below carefully, complete the BRAT adoption form (if you have not previously done so) and contact the BRAT coordinator, Juliana Birkhoff.

The coordinator's link will take you to a form that will ask you your name, email address, the city and state you live in, why this dog is perfect for your family, a typical day in your household, and, if applicable, how you plan to transport Eddie.

There is an adoption fee of $400.00 for Eddie. This fee is used for the extensive costs associated with vetting and otherwise caring for Eddie and future Basenjis in rescue. BRAT adopters receive a dog that has been spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, treated for fleas and internal worms if necessary, DNA tested for Fanconi syndrome (dogs under 10), and heartworm tested. Our dogs get recommended dental work. When indicated, we test our dogs for thyroid deficiencies. They are also temperament evaluated. In addition, BRAT provides free lifetime post-adoption counseling to help deal with behavioral or health issues. Finally, we provide a free lifetime identification tag connected to our "lost dog" toll free number.
