Requirements for Harry's new home:

• Adult, Basenji savvy home is a must;
• Must have a securely fenced yard;
• Must be an only dog;
• No flying or long-distance transports.

If you meet these requirements, read on ...

Harry is a handsome three-year-old, red and white, male Basenji. He’s very sweet and loves to meet new people and go places with his humans. In the house he will want to be where you are and is considered a “Velcro” dog. He does suffer from mild separation anxiety when not allowed to be with his humans and cannot be crated when left alone in the house. He is not house destructive other than typical Basenji tendencies to shred mail, magazines, and trash.

He is a playful and rambunctious youngster who is very food motivated and wants to please his humans. He knows basic commands (including shake) and is potty trained. He has been making great training headway with his foster family and is currently working on leash manners – his forever family will need to continue to work with him on this. He would be a great buddy for someone active who loves to go hiking, running, or go for long walks. Harry has excellent stamina.

Currently Harry rides quietly in the back seat of the car while tethered but does get very excited when approaching the places he loves most. He plays well with other dogs, but some smaller dogs might not appreciate or understand how excited he is to see them. Like most Basenjis he is lightning fast and will keep up and outrun the best of them. He could possibly be a master at lure coursing or agility.

This sweet boy is good with other dogs outside the home, and wants to play, play, play, but inside the home he does not do well with other resident dogs. He is currently being fostered in a home with another young Basenji and has been known to start fights for toys and treats. He has shown to be non-aggressive with people even when food, treats, or toys are taken away.

Harry is a very affectionate and cuddly Basenji and will do best in an active adult home that will ensure that he gets good exercise and continues basic training. He would be happiest if his human is retired or works from home and can spend lots of time with him.

Harry will not be air transported due to his current lack of crate training; applicant location will be considered for ease of transporting him to an adopter.

If you think you could provide Harry with love, activity, and evening cuddle time, please read the data sheet below carefully, complete the BRAT adoption form (if you have not previously done so) and contact the BRAT coordinator, Sabina Knight.

The coordinator's link will take you to a form that will ask you your name, email address, the city and state you live in, why this dog is perfect for your family, a typical day in your household, and, if applicable, how you plan to transport Harry.

There is an adoption fee of $350.00 for Harry. This fee is used for the extensive costs associated with vetting and otherwise caring for Harry and future Basenjis in rescue. BRAT adopters receive a dog that has been spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, treated for fleas and internal worms if necessary, DNA tested for Fanconi syndrome (dogs under 10), and heartworm tested. Our dogs get recommended dental work. When indicated, we test our dogs for thyroid deficiencies. They are also temperament evaluated. In addition, BRAT provides free lifetime post-adoption counseling to help deal with behavioral or health issues. Finally, we provide a free lifetime identification tag connected to our "lost dog" toll free number.
