Diesel is a two-year old, tricolor boy who has had a lot of adventure in his short life. He was purchased in Kentucky, but was left outside until a lady visiting from New Hampshire heard that his owner wanted to rehome him. She took him, thinking she would have a lot of time to work with him, but unfortunately, she was called back to work and Diesel's training had to stop.
Diesel is a very active boy and he dislikes a crate very much. One evening when his owner came home from work, she found that he had removed the bottom of his crate and was walking around with it on his back like a turtle. It was then that she realized he needed someone who could give him more attention and so she contacted BRAT for help.
Diesel then traveled to Florida to a foster home. There he has been getting a lot of attention and training. While he has made a lot of progress, he is still your typical young Basenji boy and he does not really like to be told what to do.
He walks well on leash and he likes car rides. He loves to play, so a female playmate in his forever home and a Basenji-experienced guardian is a must. Diesel cannot be in a home with smaller dogs because he picks on them. He needs a fenced yard.
If you can give Diesel the time and attention he has come to enjoy in his foster home, do not have small dogs and can continue to work with this boy as is necessary with any young Basenji, please read the data sheet below carefully, complete the BRAT adoption form (if you have not previously done so) and contact the BRAT coordinator, Linda Webb-Hilliard.
The coordinator's link will take you to a form that will ask you your name, email address, the city and state you live in, why this dog is perfect for your family, a typical day in your household, and, if applicable, how you plan to transport Diesel.
There is an adoption fee of $350.00 for Diesel. This fee is used for the extensive costs associated with vetting and otherwise caring for Diesel and future Basenjis in rescue. BRAT adopters receive a dog that has been spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, treated for fleas and internal worms if necessary, DNA tested for Fanconi syndrome (dogs under 10), and heartworm tested. Our dogs get recommended dental work. When indicated, we test our dogs for thyroid deficiencies. They are also temperament evaluated. In addition, BRAT provides free lifetime post-adoption counseling to help deal with behavioral or health issues. Finally, we provide a free lifetime identification tag connected to our "lost dog" toll free number.

TEMPERAMENT
He is somewhat socialized and does well meeting dogs. He takes time to warm up to playing and hasn't played much outside with us. He is very concerned when he's outside and prefers to be inside. He needs a few days to warm up to someone and does not do so instantly. He will approach a person, but he doesn't let you fully touch him, take a bone, or a toy. He's fearful of new people, at least he was described this way to us and this is what we have seen. I suspect since he's been in a safe environment for a bit, he will be better off moving forward and quicker to adjust. Now that he's partially settled (hasn't been here long enough to fully settle) he's very cuddly and he follows us around interested in whatever you're doing. He just wants to be where you are and doing what you're doing.

Other information: He's a hardcore counter surfer in the kitchen like most Basenjis. He can pull out a kitchen chair, get on it, and get on the table. He is 100% capable of jumping on the counter. I've caught him (physically caught him in the air) when he's tried to jump on the counters. He knows cues sit, no, and off. He knows his name. He's super happy to sit for treats. He's afraid of going outside, especially alone, but I suspect once he fully warms up, he will be a bit more an escape artist outside. If it is later in the day or night, he is even more afraid to go out as he doesn't want to be left out overnight. On leash, you have to work to get him out with treats or you'd be dragging him. He can jump and clear six feet with ease. This is not a "I bet he can" statement. He absolutely can. He can knock down baby gates or jump gates. He knows no boundaries (we are trying to teach them). He can be destructive (chew a blanket, cushion, pillow, scratch at the door.) Being such a scamp, it’s possible that the previous owner gave up on his training and kept him outside, so he’s a bit behind the learning curve on house manners.
