Theo is a very handsome red and white male Basenji who will celebrate his ninth birthday in November. He was purchased from a breeder at the age of 11 months. From that time until he was six years old, he had extensive training and knows heel, sit, stay, down, paw, place (sit on elevated platform). He had much attention and love in his former home. Then the family welcomed a baby. Theo does not like having the baby in his space, and as the baby got more mobile, Theo became more nervous and upset.

Theo has inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that has only flared up twice through the years. At that time, he was given medication. To prevent further problems, he must be kept on a special food, prescribed by his veterinarian (Royal Canin Hydrolyzed Protein Adult HP). Stress will cause flare-ups and a new baby in the home was stressful for him. Since going to his foster home, he has had no problems with IBD and he has not required medication for his dermatitis.

In his former home, he loved to snuggle and relax. In his foster home, he is a very laid-back boy. He prefers to sit in his spot and view whatever activity is going on. He enjoys running in the yard with the female Basenjis in the home. His favorite playmate is a nine-month-old chihuahua and they wrestle each night. Theo is very gentle with the little one. He has a place he likes to eat, and when it is time to be fed, he goes to that place and waits patiently.

Theo can be destructive in the home if left alone, but he is not destructive inside or in the yard if he has either a human or dog companion. He has destroyed several wire crates, but as long as he has companionship, no crating is required. He will go into a crate, but he is very vocal and destructive while there. He is sweet, loving, playful, silly, but not the most vocal of Basenjis unless he is letting everyone know how unhappy he is in a crate.

Theo does enjoy going to Basenji play group in his area and running with the other Basenjis and he likes long walks.

Theo is a great dog and he will be a wonderful companion for someone who is willing to accept the responsibility of keeping him on a special diet, and avoid extremely stressful situations. He would very much like to have a new home before his next birthday. He would enjoy a yard to run freely in and he would not object to having a playful companion. He wants a place where he can calmly watch the sunset as he snuggles beside his own person.

If you think you could provide Theo with love, activity, and evening cuddle time, please read the data sheet below carefully, complete the BRAT adoption form (if you have not previously done so) and contact the BRAT coordinator, Linda Webb-Hilliard.

The coordinator's link will take you to a form that will ask you your name, email address, the city and state you live in, why this dog is perfect for your family, a typical day in your household, and, if applicable, how you plan to transport Theo.

There is an adoption fee of $300.00 for Theo. This fee is used for the extensive costs associated with vetting and otherwise caring for Theo and future Basenjis in rescue. BRAT adopters receive a dog that has been spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, treated for fleas and internal worms if necessary, DNA tested for Fanconi syndrome (dogs under 10), and heartworm tested. Our dogs get recommended dental work. When indicated, we test our dogs for thyroid deficiencies. They are also temperament evaluated. In addition, BRAT provides free lifetime post-adoption counseling to help deal with behavioral or health issues. Finally, we provide a free lifetime identification tag connected to our "lost dog" toll free number.

Reason for placement: We have recently had a baby and now that she is mobile, she gets is in Theo's personal space. It is evident that the environment is too stressful for Theo and not safe for our daughter. He has shown he is stressed with her and the change in life and has flared his bowel disease more as well as he is escalating in his aggression toward her.

If you are interested in Theo, please use our coordinator contact form, to email our BRAT coordinator, Linda Webb-Hilliard. Thank you!
