Meet Zach! This handsome red and white boy – who is 7? Or 8? Or 9? – came into rescue with an elderly female Basenji companion who, sadly, succumbed to health issues. Now Zach is ready to strike out on his own and start a happy new life where he can unpack his bags and stay forever. Zach is looking for a home as a solo pet with humans who enjoy togetherness and are home much of the time.

Zach is a great sun lover and happily heads for a sunny place to drink in the sunshine. He is fine meeting new people – or dogs at the park – but is nervous about being grabbed or lifted. He likes to cuddle, though, and welcomes affection.

Dental issues from neglect in an earlier life mean that he is missing a few teeth! But it doesn’t affect him at mealtimes. He does very well on a leash and always votes YES for a walk. Zach possesses a remarkable range of Basenji sounds – everything from greetings to complaining – and can emit them with great volume!

Zach does NOT like to be crated and he makes this clear with ALL his Basenji sounds and ALL the volume. However, this should not present a problem since he is fully house-trained and has never been house destructive in his foster home.

The right home for Zach is Basenji-experienced, with no other pets. Please know that he’s unpredictable with the dogs in his foster home and would not do well with kids. Zach is currently in central Iowa and will not be allowed to travel to his new home by plane. He is snuggly and affectionate once he’s comfortable with his people. He would especially appreciate a home that is quiet. Zach has a lot of love and devotion to give and looks forward to a forever home that is all his!

If you think you could provide Zach with love, activity, and evening cuddle time, please read the data sheet below carefully, complete the BRAT adoption form (if you have not previously done so) and contact the BRAT coordinator, Lindy Ireland.

The coordinator's link will take you to a form that will ask you your name, email address, the city and state you live in, why this dog is perfect for your family, a typical day in your household, and, if applicable, how you plan to transport Zach.

There is an adoption fee of $250.00 for Zach. This fee is used for the extensive costs associated with vetting and otherwise caring for Zach and future Basenjis in rescue. BRAT adopters receive a dog that has been spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, treated for fleas and internal worms if necessary, DNA tested for Fanconi syndrome (dogs under 10), and heartworm tested. Our dogs get recommended dental work. When indicated, we test our dogs for thyroid deficiencies. They are also temperament evaluated. In addition, BRAT provides free lifetime post-adoption counseling to help deal with behavioral or health issues. Finally, we provide a free lifetime identification tag connected to our "lost dog" toll free number.
