Sparky and Patra are an easy-going, eight and a half year old bonded pair. They are both trindle – a unique color mix of tricolor and brindle. They came into BRAT after being owner-surrendered to a North Dakota animal shelter. They are both very people-friendly and are comfortable with strangers. Both can be touched all over with no grumbling, even when awakened, and will paw at their humans for attention.

They are very affectionate and vocal, and both love to sing along with their foster home’s resident Basenji! They can be left alone and are not house destructive as long as they’re together and not confined behind a closed door. When separated from each other they do both display some separation anxiety. There is no need to crate them, which is good because both deal with some serious crate-hate.

Patra and Sparky occasionally counter-surf, raid the pantry, and tear up cardboard or paper products if they’re alone and bored, but they are, for the most part, wonderfully easy Basenjis to have around.

Sparky takes a little longer than Patra to warm up to strangers, but once he does, he loves to cuddle and sleep across his human’s chest. He gets short bursts of playful energy before curling up next to his human or Patra.

Sparky’s right ear (as shown in the photos) is folded over tightly, most likely due to an injury. Because of this it needs regular cleaning to keep the inside of the ear healthy. He also has some arthritis in his hips, but regular light exercise seems to help.

His foster mom has noticed what appears to be Sparky “zoning out” a few times a week, and her veterinarian believes that he could be experiencing atypical seizures. CBD oil is given to him twice a day and seems to be reducing the episodes; it’s unknown whether he will eventually need anti-seizure medications or if the CBD oil will effectively control the occurrences.

Patra is the more outgoing Basenji, but looks to Sparky for reassurance when she’s nervous or anxious. Her bursts of energy are also rather short, but she loves to play tug of war. She, too, is a snuggler, and like Sparky, wants to be in bed, under the covers with her human. When it comes to petting and attention, if Patra feels you are neglecting her she will let you know it by pawing at you until she wins your attention. She can be a little more rebellious than Sparky, and loves to counter surf and climb on tables.

These two are very easy-going dogs. They would do well in many different types of homes, and would even make great first time Basenjis for someone. They cannot be in a home with cats due to their high prey drive and desire to eat their foster home’s cats. J

They have done ok with meeting some other dogs, but would prefer a home without other dogs – each other’s company is more than enough for them. They would do best in a home with older kids, or only adults. Sparky gets a little rough during play and can be snippy with Patra, so living with young kids is not ideal.

Sparky and Patra are currently located in east central Minnesota. Longer transports may be worked out for them as they are extremely easy to travel with. They are calm and relaxed in a vehicle, content to just curl up and nap (as long as they are not crated).

If you think you could provide Sparky and Patra with love, activity, and evening cuddle time, please read the data sheet below carefully, complete the BRAT adoption form (if you have not previously done so) and contact the BRAT coordinator, Kelsey Brown.

The coordinator's link will take you to a form that will ask you your name, email address, the city and state you live in, why this dog is perfect for your family, a typical day in your household, and, if applicable, how you plan to transport Sparky and Patra.

There is an adoption fee of $475.00 for Sparky and Patra. This fee is used for the extensive costs associated with vetting and otherwise caring for Sparky and Patra and future Basenjis in rescue. BRAT adopters receive a dog that has been spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, treated for fleas and internal worms if necessary, DNA tested for Fanconi syndrome (dogs under 10), and heartworm tested. Our dogs get recommended dental work. When indicated, we test our dogs for thyroid deficiencies. They are also temperament evaluated. In addition, BRAT provides free lifetime post-adoption counseling to help deal with behavioral or health issues. Finally, we provide a free lifetime identification tag connected to our "lost dog" toll free number.
