It is my privilege to introduce you to Benji! Benji is a very handsome, independent, healthy, 12 year old tricolor boy who is looking for his forever home. Benji shuffled through a few homes before BRAT stepped in to give Benji a new beginning, stability, and a soft landing spot where he could be loved unconditionally.

Upon entering his foster home, he made minimal eye contact, lacked trust and was very depressed. Watching Benji develop trust and blossom over the last few months has been incredibly rewarding for his foster dad. Benji will continue to bloom if someone can  open up their heart to give him the forever home he so deserves.

Benji is a very wise soul, and is keenly aware of everything going on around him. He loves having his own space and alone time, and he is easily the most “cat like” of any Basenji in his foster home. As he gains trust with you, he will begin asking to be petted and loved. Benji will melt your heart and make you appreciate that this Basenji wants to say yes to love, despite going through so many difficult transitions.

A few fun facts about Benji:

- Benji has never had an accident in his foster home and even began asking to go out his first day!
- He has no interest in destroying anything (yes, we are certain he is a Basenji). Even tissue paper is not enticing to him!
- He is awesome on a leash and loves, loves, going for walks and investigating the world around him. He is also fantastic in the car and enjoys going on new adventures.
- Benji is a sun worshipper extraordinaire! He absolutely loves lying in the sun, and will literally will lay outside for hours on his own, basking in the sun. He will find the sunniest spots in your home and camp out there whenever he is inside.
- As he gains trust with you he will tap you when he wants to go outside, wants to be petted, wants a treat or to tell you it is dinner time. You will know which one it is!
- He is a bit shy and prefers to make the first attempt at interaction with new people. He has improved so much at this, that he is becoming the first Basenji at his foster dad’s to want to meet new people.

Benji would probably prefer a home with no younger dogs, as he really likes his personal space. Probably the best situation would be if he was an only dog or one with a female around his age.

Even though he is not (yet) big on coming up and cuddling with you in a chair or couch, at the end of the day he will cuddle with you in your bed and he will stay loyally next to you all night long. His foster dad rates him an A+ cuddler, once he trusts you. After a full day of adventure, seeing him relax, stretching out and listening to him breathe and fall asleep to his dreams as he is smushed next to you, is pure joy. If you open up your heart and home to Benji, he will be one of the rewards of your lifetime.

Benji is currently located near Buffalo, New York. Applicants more than three hours away (by drive time) should include transport plans in their application.

If you think you could provide Benji with love, activity, and evening cuddle time, please read the data sheet below carefully, complete the BRAT adoption form (if you have not previously done so) and contact the BRAT coordinator, Melissa & Bob Ketterer.

The coordinator's link will take you to a form that will ask you your name, email address, the city and state you live in, why this dog is perfect for your family, a typical day in your household, and, if applicable, how you plan to transport Benji.

There is an adoption fee of $150.00 for Benji. This fee is used for the extensive costs associated with vetting and otherwise caring for Benji and future Basenjis in rescue. BRAT adopters receive a dog that has been spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, treated for fleas and internal worms if necessary, DNA tested for Fanconi syndrome (dogs under 10), and heartworm tested. Our dogs get recommended dental work. When indicated, we test our dogs for thyroid deficiencies. They are also temperament evaluated. In addition, BRAT provides free lifetime post-adoption counseling to help deal with behavioral or health issues. Finally, we provide a free lifetime identification tag connected to our "lost dog" toll free number.

He is a very sturdy and healthy 12 year old basenji, and looks and moves like a much younger dog.
