Meet Derek, a sweet, spunky female Basenji. She is a gorgeous eight-year-old brindle who came to BRAT after her mom adopted two small children. Derek was very bonded and protective of her mom and had a hard time sharing the spotlight or tolerating the ways of her new toddler housemates. Her foster mom has found her to be very affectionate and loving, even to strangers. She can be picked up, petted, and touched everywhere.

Derek is a beautiful, lean athlete who can run effortlessly and routinely leaves other dogs at the park in the dust. Her foster parents have found her to be a wonderful running partner. If she is not sufficiently exercised, she may engage in moderately destructive behavior (e.g. typical Basenji chewing or shredding of paper). She's very playful and loves toys – particularly the ones that squeak – and will readily dismantle them if not supervised. She's also an avid counter surfer.

Derek is crate trained, is food driven, and routinely comes on command. She can sit and lay down when rewarded with treats, but like many Basenjis, may ignore you without them. She sleeps in her foster parents’ bed and crawls under the covers. When her foster parents leave during the day, Derek is crated.

Derek has had little socialization with other dogs, and can be nervous around them. She will tolerate her much older foster sister (14 years old), but has been not been able to find common ground with her younger foster brother (five-year-old). She has not been around cats, so we cannot say for sure how she would tolerate them. Derek would do best in a home where she is the only dog.

Although her foster parents think she would do fine with older kids who understand how to respect her boundaries, Derek will not be placed in a home with young kids under the age of 10. Her ideal adoptive family would have no other dogs and be able to supply Derek with all the attention she needs. Her new humans must be willing to provide sufficient exercise to keep her mind and body occupied. Derek is a sweet girl, ready to find new humans to share her love with.

If you think you could provide Derek with love, activity, and evening cuddle time, please read the data sheet below carefully, complete the BRAT adoption form (if you have not previously done so) and contact the BRAT coordinator, Kelsey Brown.

The coordinator's link will take you to a form that will ask you your name, email address, the city and state you live in, why this dog is perfect for your family, a typical day in your household, and, if applicable, how you plan to transport Derek.

There is an adoption fee of $300.00 for Derek. This fee is used for the extensive costs associated with vetting and otherwise caring for Derek and future Basenjis in rescue. BRAT adopters receive a dog that has been spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, treated for fleas and internal worms if necessary, DNA tested for Fanconi syndrome (dogs under 10), and heartworm tested. Our dogs get recommended dental work. When indicated, we test our dogs for thyroid deficiencies. They are also temperament evaluated. In addition, BRAT provides free lifetime post-adoption counseling to help deal with behavioral or health issues. Finally, we provide a free lifetime identification tag connected to our "lost dog" toll free number.
