THIS DOG IS PENDING. Pending means this dog has tentatively found a home but the adoption has not yet been finalized. Though marked pending, you can still apply.

Raven is a sweet three-year-old female Basenji currently located in Wisconsin. With a sleek black coat and white feet and the tip of her tail, this girl is beautiful. Once she is comfortable with you and trusts you, she will love you with her all her heart.

Raven gets excited when her humans come home, wagging her tail because she is so happy to see them. She wants to be with her humans and follows them around from room to room. While her foster works from home, she lays beside him wanting to be close. As soon as you sit down, Raven will jump onto the couch to join you either sitting on your lap or beside you. She just wants to be close to her humans. She loves to be the little spoon when snuggling in bed or on the couch. Raven always wants to cuddle whether you are watching TV or relaxing.

Raven loves her walks and gets excited when she sees her fosters putting on their shoes and grabbing the leash. She runs around in circles and wags her tail, because she is so excited for her walk. She will run up to the screen door and stand on her hind legs and put her front paws on the door in excitement. Her fosters suspect that she was not walked often in her previous home, so she pulls at times, but she is improving and does well for a beginner. She has also begun to appreciate sniffing and investigating, so do not be in a hurry.

Raven is extremely well behaved for a Basenji. She never gets into the trash and has never been destructive in her foster home even when left alone. She does not counter surf. She can be moved when sleeping. She is treat motivated and working on her sit command which is nearing perfection. She does well at the vet and does not need to be muzzled or medicated.

Raven loves car rides and does well in a crate or in her seatbelt. When it is time to take a car ride with her foster, she jumps up into the back of the car where she is secured with her doggy seatbelt. Raven does get excited when her humans arrive at their destination. In typical Basenji fashion, the car doors should not be opened until she is leashed, because she might dart out since she is so excited to get there.

Raven loves food and does beg. If you are sitting on the couch eating, she will stick her nose into your space to get a sniff of your food or she will look at you intently as you eat. If you leave a plate unattended and within reach, she will help herself to what is left. She has shown great skill and agility by stretching with her back legs on the top of the couch and her front legs on the table to get to an unattended plate, but you cannot help but laugh.

Raven is crate trained and comfortable in her crate. At times she relaxes in her cage during the day, and occasionally eats her dinners in her cage. In her previous home, she slept in a crate every night. Upon arriving in her foster home, she jumped into bed the first night and slept with her pack, enjoying the cuddle time. In fact, every morning she stays in bed and sleeps in after her foster parents get up. Initially her foster home crated her when they left the house, and Raven was content in her cage. She was so good in the crate that they decided to leave her out. They slowly left her for longer periods, and she has never been destructive or had any problems. Now she is no longer crated when they leave the house.

Upon arriving in her foster home, Raven ignored the toys, but she watched the resident Basenji boy play with toys, and she saw they were fun. Now she shakes her toys furiously, tosses them in the air, and plays fetch with her humans or tug of war with the resident Basenji. When she first met her foster brother, she was leery of him trying to play with her. What was this strange boy doing, pawing at her and bouncing around? Now they run the Basenji 500 around the backyard and wrestle together. When Raven is not playing or snuggling with her humans, then she finds a cozy, sunny spot to sleep. She goes out the doggy door and lays on the furniture on the deck or lays in the grass or comes back inside and lays on top of the cushions on the back of the couch.

Raven is a rare low-maintenance Basenji who has a long list of positives – rides well in a car, crate trained, well behaved at the vet, gets along with other dogs, not destructive, and has no problem being left alone. She will steal your heart with her sweet, cuddly personality. Raven would do well in a variety of homes – basenji experienced or first-time basenji owner, with a doggy sibling or by herself. Most importantly, she needs a home that will love her and give her the cuddle time that she deserves. In return, it will melt your heart to walk in the door and see her wagging her tail because her human is home, and she is so excited to see you. Raven has a lot of love to give.

If you think you could provide Raven with love, activity, and evening cuddle time, please read the data sheet below carefully, complete the BRAT adoption form (if you have not previously done so) and contact the BRAT coordinator, Brooke Stephens.

The coordinator's link will take you to a form that will ask you your name, email address, the city and state you live in, why this dog is perfect for your family, a typical day in your household, and, if applicable, how you plan to transport Raven.

There is an adoption fee of $325.00 for Raven. This fee is used for the extensive costs associated with vetting and otherwise caring for Raven and future Basenjis in rescue. BRAT adopters receive a dog that has been spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, treated for fleas and internal worms if necessary, DNA tested for Fanconi syndrome (dogs under 10), and heartworm tested. Our dogs get recommended dental work. When indicated, we test our dogs for thyroid deficiencies. They are also temperament evaluated. In addition, BRAT provides free lifetime post-adoption counseling to help deal with behavioral or health issues. Finally, we provide a free lifetime identification tag connected to our "lost dog" toll free number.

Temperament description: Raven was initially anxious arriving in her foster home – walking around frantically, looking out windows, unable to relax, vocal and leery of being petted especially on her face. In less than a week she was comfortable and adjusted, and she became extremely affectionate. She loves cuddles and pets, is very excited to see you come in the door, and generally loves attention. She is comfortable in her crate, but she is not destructive if she is left alone to roam the house alone. Raven is nervous around strangers but never aggressive towards people or dogs. She plays, runs, and wrestles with her Basenji foster brother. In general Raven walks well on a leash but likes to stop for lots of sniffs.

Upon first arriving in her foster home, Raven had a few incidents of nervous pees inside the house when she was left alone behind a closed door and knew her humans were on the other side. Destructive outdoors: No
Dog is a climber: No
Easily startled: At first if her foster turned suddenly with Raven following them and bumped into Raven, she would scream in surprise. The more comfortable she becomes, the less she is started by things.

Gets carsick: No
Rides in crate: Yes, either a crate or harness/seatbelt.
Yodels: Yes. Raven yodeled in the first few days after arriving
Screams: Yes, when surprised, but it is mostly dramatic.

Other information: Raven is an extremely sweet girl. She has many traits that are typical for basenjis but does not have many of the difficult behaviors that most basenjis have. She is a low maintenance Basenji and would adapt well to a variety of homes.
